MOVIE STAR STEVEN SEAGAL JOINS SHERIFF JOE ARPAIO TO TRAIN ARMED ‘POSSE’ AS SCHOOL GUARDS

- Erica Ritz

(TheBlaze/AP) — The self-proclaimed “toughest sheriff” in America joined forces this weekend with action movie star Steven Seagal to train volunteer posse members to defend Phoenix-area schools against gunmen.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio announced the controversial plan in the wake of the December Newtown, Conn., school shooting that left 27 people dead, including the gunman and 20 first-graders.

The exercise Saturday was held at a closed school site in suburban Fountain Hills outside Phoenix where sheriff’s SWAT members acted as shooters and 25 teenagers played the part of students during mock scenarios involving up to three gunmen. According to 3TV, the group practiced with several different types of guns, all firing blanks.

Seagal, best known for his roles in movies such as “Above the Law” and “Under Siege,” will lead training on hand-to-hand defense tactics and other techniques drawing from his expertise in martial arts, according to a sheriff’s office news release.
When faced with criticism in January about the school posse plan, Arpaio snapped back: “Why would people complain about my posse being in front of schools to act as prevention?”

He boldly announced the plan on the grounds of an elementary school, saying at the time he wanted the patrols publicized.

“I want everyone to know about it for the deterrence effect,” Arpaio said, adding that no taxpayer money would be spent on the patrols and volunteers would be supervised over the radio or telephone by actual deputies.

But Arizona Democratic House Minority Leader Chad Campbell called the plan to use Seagal as an instructor “ludicrous.”

“Steve Seagal is an actor. That’s it. Why don’t we also have Clint Eastwood and Chuck Norris and Bruce Willis come out and train them too while we’re at it,” Campbell said with condescension.

Campbell has been a vocal critic of Arpaio’s school posse protection plan, complaining that using untrained, armed civilians to protect students is a bad idea and likely will only make the facilities more dangerous.

“He’s making a mockery out of it. You’re having a movie actor train people how to protect schools?” Campbell said.

Current posse members already are used to bolster the sheriff’s office force by providing police protection at malls during the holidays, directing traffic and transporting people to jail. But the sheriff announced this week that he needs more members to continue the work, calling for 1,000 additional citizens to step up and volunteer.
Joselyn Wells, a mother of three children at a school in suburban Phoenix, where Arpaio’s posse has begun patrolling, said she was excited to hear about the initiative.

“A lot of people sit around and watch these things happen, watch key signs and no one wants to do anything about it,” she said when Arpaio announced the plan. “Nobody wants conflict, nobody wants to be out in the limelight. And he doesn’t care. He wants to do the right thing.”

SEE THE PRAYER BREAKFAST SPEECH THAT’S GRABBING HEADLINES:

DOCTOR ATTACKS POLITICAL CORRECTNESS, NATIONAL DEBT IN FRONT OF OBAMA
- Billy Hallowell
  • Dr. Benjamin Carson delivered a noteworthy National Prayer Breakfast keynote speech in President Barack Obama’s presence
  • Carson attacked political correctness as a “dangerous” threat to free speech and encouraged Americans to boldly share their views
  • The pediatric neurosurgeon also provided his theories about the national debt, deficits, taxation and health care, taking stances that were opposed to the president’s
  • Obama watched intently as Carson spoke for more than 25 minutes
One of the more unique speeches delivered at this morning’s National Prayer Breakfast came from Dr. Benjamin S. Carson, a world-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Taking the stage before President Barack Obama’s faith-filled address, Carson spoke for more than 25 minutes, tackling issues ranging from education to personal responsibility. His keynote, while predicated upon the theme of Jesus Christ as his ultimate role model, also took a starkly political tone, advocating against some of the very policies the president has implemented.

At the beginning of his speech, Carson shared an intense disdain for political correctness. Without getting too specific on the issue front, he said that Americans should stop being afraid to speak up and defend their beliefs; he also encouraged people to respect the individuals they disagree with. Carson held little back, condemning political correctness as “a horrible thing” that is “dangerous,” as it hampers freedom of thought and expression.

“We’ve reached a point where people are actually afraid to talk about what they want to say, because somebody might be offended,” Carson said, noting the example of people refraining from saying “Merry Christmas.” “We’ve got to get over this sensitivity and it keeps people from saying what they really believe.”
Carson encouraged discussion about societal issues, also pointing out education as an essential conundrum the country needs to confront. He highlighted his own path from poverty to success, sharing very personal details about his parents and early family life and subsequently described the importance of helping students seeking to advance academically through his Carson Scholars Fund.

The speech took an interesting turn when the doctor cautioned that moral decay and fiscal irresponsibility can have dire consequences — even for powerful countries like America. Here, he became even more pointed and impassioned.

“I think particularly about ancient Rome. Very powerful — nobody could even challenge them militarily…they destroyed themselves from within,” Carson continued. “Moral decay. Fiscal irresponsibility.”

While he said America’s issues are dire, he was positive that the nation can fix its ways, as there are bright and innovative people who simply need to come together to address the problems at hand.

“And one of our big problems right now…our deficit is a big problem,” he said, as Obama watched him intently. ”Think about it — and our national debt — $16 and a half trillion dollars.”

To illustrate just how massive the debt is, Carson told the audience that if they counted one number per second, it would take them 507,000 years to get to the sum total. The doctor said that the massive fiscal blunder is something that the nation must contend with. From there, he moved on to taxation, seemingly taking a stance in direct opposition to Obama’s.

“What about our taxation system — so complex there is no one that can possibly comply with every jot and tittle,” he noted, going on to call for a simpler (i.e. flat tax) system. ”When I pick up my Bible, you know what I see — I see the fairest individual in the universe — God — and he’s given us a system. It’s called tithe.”

BRUCE WILLIS: DON’T MESS WITH THE SECOND AMENDMENT

- Becket Adams

Hollywood legend Bruce Willis has a message for advocates of stricter gun control legislation: Don’t infringe on my rights.

“I think that you can’t start to pick apart anything out of the Bill of Rights without thinking that it’s all going to become undone,” Willis told The Associated Press while promoting his latest action extravaganza, “A Good Day to Die Hard.”

“If you take one out or change one law, then why wouldn’t they take all your rights away from you?” he asked.

The actor adds that he thinks “the real topic is diminished” when people try to blame Hollywood for mass shootings.

“No one commits a crime because they saw a film. There’s nothing to support that,” Willis said. “We’re not making movies about people that have gone berserk, or gone nuts. Those kind of movies wouldn’t last very long at all.”

Willis, like many supporters of the Second Amendment, says that he doesn’t understand how stricter gun control laws, like the ones recently passed in New York, will prevent another Aurora or Sandy Hook shooting.

“It’s a difficult thing and I really feel bad for those families,” he said. “I’m a father and it’s just a tragedy. But I don’t know how you legislate insanity. I don’t know what you do about it. I don’t even know how you begin to stop that.”

CUSTODIAN CLAIMS SCHOOL FIRED HIM FOR COMPLAINING ABOUT CO-WORKER’S MISTREATMENT OF AMERICAN FLAG

- Liz Klimas

A custodian in a South Dakota school district took a video of an improperly folded American flag and posted it on Facebook along with a message asking people call the superintendent over what was supposedly repeated mistreatment of the flag. On Monday, the janitor says he was fired.

Cesar Zakahi said on his Facebook page that he was fired from Stanley County School District in Fort Pierre for standing up for the flag and that this video was part of the issue:

Here’s what Zakahi wrote on his Facebook page:
I was a custodian in a small town school gym, i posted on my fb Page a coworkers abuse of the United States flag, and was fired
He continued in a post Wednesday saying:
Hello I am Cesar zakahi i am the guy that got fired for posting the US flag being disrespected at my work, i was born and raised in South Dakota, i am a disabled vet, i in would do this again even though it cost my job to stop the disrespect of the flag,

The school district’s Superintendent Don Hotalling told Keloland TV that Zakahi was no longer working for the school and that he was let go during a 90-day initial probation period since his hiring.

‘HERCULES’ ACTOR KEVIN SORBO BASHES HOLLYWOOD’S LIBERAL HYPOCRISY

AND RIPS OBAMA: ‘ONE OF THE WORST RECORDS’ IN AMERICAN HISTORY
- Billy Hallowell

Kevin Sorbo has had a fascinating and successful entertainment career. Perhaps best known for his lead television role in ”Hercules: The Legendary Journeys,” the actor has also been in a multitude of feature films, including “Soul Surfer” and “Prairie Fever,” among others. TheBlaze spoke with Sorbo this week to discuss his new movie, “Abel’s Field,” and to get his perspective on faith and the current political climate in America.

A unique individual, especially when juxtaposed against others in Hollywood, Sorbo is a Christian and, on the political front, he’s independently-minded. Rather than subscribing to Tinseltown’s leftist slant, his sociopolitical views are middle-of-the-road. Both of these attributes are rare in an industry that pushes Democratic politics, while embracing and touting less-than-conservative theological views.
Kevin Sorbo Tells TheBlaze About His Christian and Political Viewpoints

When TheBlaze asked about his faith, Sorbo was candid, saying that he’s considered himself a Christian all of his life. He was brought up going to church and recalled being in middle school when he truly understood the Bible’s message.

“We’re not perfect — I’ve gone through trials and errors,” he said, claiming that his faith has experienced both ”ebbs and flows.”

Considering Hollywood’s ideological slant, we asked Sorbo if it is difficult to be a believer there. His answer was intriguing, as the actor explained, in detail, the challenges he regularly faces. To begin, unlike other entertainers, despite a busy career, Sorbo doesn’t really consider himself a part of Hollywood.

“I kind of removed myself from Hollywood a long time ago. I’m not really good about going out to schmoozing fests,” he said. “It’s such a phony atmosphere. It’s hard to make true friends.”

He went on to say that he despises the “politics of Hollywood” and that the industry is all about people doing favors for one another. In Tinseltown ”yes…means maybe,” he told TheBlaze. But his critique didn’t end there. Extending beyond the ins and outs of the industry, the ideological affiliations and liberal nature of the entertainment sphere also frustrate the actor.

“Hollywood screams tolerance, but they’re the least tolerant people you’ll ever meet in your life,” he continued. “The hypocrisy just reeks in this town. Why can’t we all have a point of view?”

As for his own political affiliations, Sorbo is neither a Democrat nor a Republican. He describes himself as “a true independent” — one who has strong views against socialism and the path that Europe has taken (one he fears the U.S. might be on).

“I voted for Reagan. I voted for Clinton. I [select] who is honestly the best person at that time to run the country [and I] think there’s problems on both sides of the aisle,” he said, later adding, “I keep asking my far-left liberal friends to show me where socialism works — show me where socialism has ever been successful.”

Clearly, Sorbo isn’t one for mincing words, calling political correctness a habit that is “absolutely destroying this country.” As far as President Barack Obama goes, Sorbo believes he “has one of the worst records” this country has ever seen, despite being elected to a historic second term.

The actor is well aware of the fact that his views separate him from other entertainers. After all, he doesn’t consider himself a part of the establishment. Plus, Sorbo admitted to TheBlaze that he’s been blacklisted by those who disagree with his politics. Still, the actor notes that he gets along with people from all political standpoints and that he enjoys a good debate (throughout the interview, he made reference to the fact that he has liberal friends).

TED NUGENT GOES OFF ON PIERS MORGAN DURING FIERY GUN DEBATE: ‘YOU’RE SO FULL OF CRAP’

- Jason Howerton

Rock legend Ted Nugent sat down with CNN’s Piers Morgan in a Texas gun shop on Monday to talk, well, guns. Nugent blasted Morgan over his apparent “obsession with guns” and told him to leave responsible American gun owners “the hell alone.”

Morgan began the interview by asking his guest to explain to him, “in the least inflammatory way possible,” why any American needs to own an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle. Morgan had just gotten done shooting an AR-15 at a gun range and said he was surprised by the power it possessed.

After first offering prayers to the Chris Kyle and Littlefield families, Nugent told Morgan to “take it to the bank” that he would never understand the true purpose of firearms.

“You don’t understand that it’s a simple inanimate tool that tens of millions of American families own that have never caused a problem, never had an accident and will never commit a crime,” Nugent said.

Morgan countered by saying 100,000 Americans get hit by gunfire each year.

“Let me stop you there, because I’ve been hearing you say this and you’re so full of crap. Listen to me, that statistic includes bad guys shot by cops and intruders shot by homeowners. So that figure is bogus,” Nugent shot back.

Then Morgan explained that 18,000 people commit suicide using a gun every year in the U.S., to which Nugent quickly replied: “Japan has a higher suicide rate and they aren’t allowed to get downwind of a gun. You’re turn.”

“Do you care about murders?” Nugent pressed. “Or do you only care about about murders with guns?”

“I care about all death,” Morgan replied.

“I don’t think you do. I think you care about guns. I think You’re obsessed with guns,” Nugent said, before going off on a fiery diatribe defending gun owners in America.
“99.99% of the gun owners of America are wonderful people that you are hanging around with here today. Perfectly safe. Perfectly harmless. Wonderful, loving, giving, generous caring people. Would you leave us the hell alone? Go after the nut jobs, go after the murderers, because I don’t know any. We need to lock up the bad guys and when people show dangerous, murderous intent, which everyone one of these mass murderers showed. All their neighbors, their family, their teachers, their fellow students, they all knew they were crazy but, Piers, we didn’t stop them because we’re worried about hurting their feelings. We have a mad man problem in America…”

CONGRESSIONAL BLACK CAUCUS MEMBER: OBAMA DISRESPECTS BLACKS

Congressional Black Caucus Member Alcee Hastings: Obama Disrespects Blacks

- Madeleine Morgenstern

Congressman Alcee Hastings (D-Fla.) accused President Barack Obama of ignoring and disrespecting black groups that were crucial to his winning re-election in November, including the Congressional Black Caucus, black newspapers and historically black colleges.

The 76-year-old lawmaker said the Congressional Black Caucus sent a number of qualified names to the White House as possible cabinet picks but was ignored. The Obama administration has been criticized, particularly in recent weeks, for a lack of diversity in key posts.

“The black caucus of Congress then sent 61 names to the White House,” Hastings told the National Newspaper Publishers Association last week. “Time went by. Not one of that 61 was selected – not one.”

WAYNE LAPIERRE: OBAMA TRYING TO TAKE AWAY RIFLES, SHOTGUNS & HANDGUNS AND CREATE A UNIVERSAL GUN REGISTRY

- Madeleine Morgenstern

National Rifle Association’s executive vice president Wayne LaPierre on Sunday said the Obama administration is trying to take away rifles, shotguns and handguns and create a universal registry of gun owners

“During the campaign when [Obama] said to people, ‘I will not take away your rifle, shotgun, handgun,’” LaPierre said on “Fox News Sunday. “They leafleted the country with flyers, ‘Obama’s not going to take your gun,’ ‘Obama will protect gun rights’ and now he’s trying to take away all three.”

Host Chris Wallace said, “He’s not taking away shotguns.”

“Have you looked at the Feinstein bill that he’s supporting?” LaPierre said. “That’s exactly what it does. I think what they’ll do is they’ll turn this universal check on the law-abiding into a universal registry of law-abiding people.”

Wallace said there is “no indication” whatsoever that the White House wants those things.

“Forgive me sir but you take something that is here and you say it is going to go all the way over there,” Wallace said. “There is no indication…there is nothing that anyone in the administration has said that indicates they’re going to have a universal registry.”

“And Obamacare wasn’t a tax until they needed it to be a tax — ” LaPierre said.

” — it was the Supreme Court that said it,” Wallace said.

“I don’t think you can trust these people,” LaPierre said.

LaPierre testified on Capitol Hill last week in strong opposition to background checks. He repeated his criticisms Sunday, saying universal checks would amount to a bureaucratic nightmare that would “affect only the law-abiding people. Criminals could care less.”

‘IT’S DEAD, DEAD, DEAD’: JUSTICE SCALIA BLASTS SCHOOLCHILDREN WHO DON’T UNDERSTAND THE CONSTITUTION

- Mytheos Holt

Justice Antonin Scalia’s outspoken advocacy for originalism has on occasion reached controversial heights. Certainly, that may well be the case with his most recent comments, excoriating schoolchildren for misinterpreting the constitution (or, one supposes, for accepting their teachers’ willful misinterpretation):

On Monday, Scalia had a different target for his ire. He complained of schoolchildren who visit the Supreme Court and call the Constitution a “living document.”
It’s not a living document,” Scalia said, according to the Dallas Morning News. “It’s dead, dead, dead.”
Scalia also suggested on Monday night that his strict interpretation of the Constitution sometimes forces him to write opinions that conflict with his personal beliefs.
This issue – that of the “living constitution” – has been a pet peeve of Scalia’s for a while.

COLBERT SKEWERS CNN’S PIERS MORGAN ON GUN CONTROL: ‘DO YOU HATE THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION?’

- Billy O'Hallowell, The Blaze

Last night, CNN’s Piers Morgan appeared on “The Colbert Report” to discuss firearms in America and the Second Amendment. During the comical exchange, comedian Stephen Colbert questioned Morgan’s recent gun control diatribes — and his knowledge of the U.S. Constitution. After introducing the CNN personality as ”a talk show host who thinks he’s best for America,” Colbert quickly began launching his quips.

“I mean this in the most respectful way possible. Get the f**k out of here,” he told Morgan. “Do you understand, to an American ear, what it sounds like to have an English accent telling us how to live our lives?”

Morgan, while laughing, admitted that such a notion is, indeed, an annoyance. Of course, Colbert wasn’t done there.

“Do you hate the United States Constitution?,” he repeatedly asked the CNN host, at one point handing him a pocket-sized copy of the historical document.

While the exchange was colored by comedy and was not serious in nature (after all, this is Colbert), Morgan did take a few moments to defend his views. He invoked the horrific shooting at Sandy Hook, claiming that the incident should be an example that spawns both intense concern and action among the public.

“I think when 20 young children get blown to pieces, America should say, ‘Something has to be done,’” Morgan proclaimed.

Colbert did note that some have accused Morgan of “pumping up” his ratings by bringing “crazy people” on his program. Here, he was likely referring to Alex Jones’ appearance on “Piers Morgan Tonight” — a fiery exchange that subsequently went viral.

Watch the comical exchange, below:

OFFICIALS IN UTAH TOWN WANT EVERY HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD TO OWN A GUN — AND KNOW HOW TO USE IT

Spring City, Utah Officials Urge Citizens and Teachers to Arm Themselves
A welcome sign to Spring City is shown Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, in Spring City, Utah. Officials in a small Utah town are urging citizens and teachers to arm themselves for everyone’s safety against any aggressor. One member of the Spring City council wants to make the edict mandatory, but police are urging restraint. Councilman Neil Sorensen says he’s drafting a measure that will go before the full council in February. At first, Sorensen wanted to mandate a gun in every household in the town of 1,000. Credit: AP
SPRING CITY, Utah (TheBlaze/AP) — Officials in a small Utah town want to make sure every head of household has a firearm and knows how to use it, and they want to give school teachers training with guns too.
Spring City Councilman Neil Sorensen first proposed an ordinance requiring a gun in every household in the town of 1,000. The rest of the council scoffed at making it a requirement, but they unanimously agreed to move forward with an ordinance “recommending” the idea.
The council also approved funding to offer concealed firearms training Friday to the 20 teachers and administrators at the local elementary school.
“It sends a statement that criminals better think twice,” Sorensen told The Associated Press on Tuesday. “If a teacher would have had a concealed weapon in Sandy Hook, I think the death loss would have been fewer. If sane, trained people had guns, they could have shot back.”
The measure, which will go before the full council in February for further review, seems to have the support of the council’s five members and many residents in the farming community about 90 miles south of Salt Lake City.

‘AMERICAN DREAM LABS’:

WAIT UNTIL YOU HEAR HOW GLENN BECK PLANS TO TRANSFORM THE NEWS INDUSTRY

Glenn Beck Unveils Greater Details About American Dream Labs
TheBlaze TV
As discussed last evening,  Glenn Beck plans to take this week to slowly unveil his newest venture, American Dream Labs. His Tuesday evening broadcast was no exception, and focused on new technologies TheBlaze aims to implement in the year ahead.
Beck also promised to make a series of announcements concerning his network over the course of the next 60 days, including a “global information center” headquartered in New York and the launch of international bureaus in three different cities around the world. The locations will be announced soon, and, according to Beck, the intentions behind each will be obvious once revealed.
At its core, Beck hopes to build a global news organization that values American exceptionalism, freedom and the Declaration of Independence, each of which he feels will help to bring a uniquely American point of view to international news coverage.
On the home-front, Beck also announced the launch of a new investigative news magazine titled “For The Record,” utilizing journalists to uncover the stories “no one else will touch.” He added that in the past, his documentary team is expanding to provide this in-depth coverage and that new programs will be added to daily Blaze broadcasts to keep viewers informed with fresh content throughout the day.
Beck also hopes to introduce, even if next year, the next “Nightline.” He believes that ABC recently ousted the long running evening news program because the network was not ”telling the right stories.” Thus, Beck sees a market waiting to be filled, this one in the form of a nightly half-hour broadcast on a range of topics not covered by mainstream media.
Of particular note, Beck was emphatic in telling his viewers that all of TheBlaze’s new initiatives will all be done “without the influence of special interests…kickbacks or government loans.”
“We’re in a bad economy and we expect those things to get worse,” he added.
He said that one of the main reasons he runs his company without loans or on lines of credit is because big banks are “above and beyond the law now.”
“Everything we do is possible because of the dollars you commit… You are way more than just an audience. You trust us with your money and we take that trust seriously,” Beck said.
While Beck has been told by industry and non-industry veterans that what he is trying to achieve with TheBlaze cannot be done, but he begs to differ.
When they say “there’s no way I can do what I’ve done, I tell them ‘yes there is!’”
“When you have good, smart, dedicated and creative people — people who believe in something and are willing to lose some sleep — there’s no limit to what you can do.”
